Types of Persian Rugs

High quality rugs of the Persians can be categorized into two different names, the Persian City Rugs and the Persian Tribal Rugs. Their name is literally found or given according to the place, city or tribe in which they are made and designed. Below are several examples of the rugs and their corresponding names:

Persian City Rugs

1) Afshar Rugs
Its design usually incorporates multiple medallions in diamond shapes connected to each other and with geometrical patterns to form out the whole carpet. These rugs are actually produced in slightly smaller sizes than any other standard ones. The most common designs or patterns to be found on these rugs are repeating roses, chicken-like and boteh motifs.

They are mostly colored in reddish, dark red, dark reddish blue, dark blue, brown, reddish brown, ocher, camel and burnt orange. The knots and foundation used are normally symmetrical Turkish knots and wools respectively, but there are also asymmetrical Persian knots and cotton foundation used as well.

2) Kashan Rugs
Their designs are almost always formed by curve lines. One of the all time favorite traditional design is an elongated diamond shaped and lobed medallion with floral like ornaments. Other than that, pictorial, hunting and vase designs are also popular and can be frequently seen in their rugs. Rich red, navy blue, ivory and beige are some of the most used colors in creating these rugs. Some other colors are also used to create the patterns in it.

Persian Tribal Rugs

1) Baluch Rugs
By following the ancient Persian tradition that dates back to 2500 years ago, such rugs are created mainly to express themselves. Most of the time, these hand woven rugs are either seen to have an overall design or a prayer carpet design. Each of their carpet is unique and there will not be any duplicates to be found. Their primary colors are ivory, rich burgundy and some navy blue.

2) Shiraz Rugs
The expression of this rug is considered as simple, warm, and comfortable and are favored by many. This carpet is often done in a crudely manner with shaggy ends. However some of the older Shiraz rugs are found to be amazingly finely done. Like many Persian rugs, geometric motifs, plants and small animals are used in their design, along with barber poll effect selvages made of two colors. Their color scheme is always kept to the low and red is their upmost used color.
